This course is a follow-on to the course Review of Mechanical Ventilation for Critical Care presented by Anastasia Newman.
This online course takes a deeper-dive into mechanical ventilation and highlights important information for physiotherapists to be aware of.
Topics covered include:
- How do medical teams decide on non-invasive vs invasive ventilation
- Other gasses used in the management of ventilated patients
- Humidification
- An update on modes of ventilation
- Anatomy of a ventilator screen
- Assessing oxygenation on ABGs

Course Objectives
Upon completion of this online course participants will be able to:
- Understand how ventilator settings and readings impact their treatment plans.
- Identify signs of an acutely deteriorating patient.
- Understand the full spectrum of care for patients post-mechanical ventilation
Speaker Bio: Amy Ellis
Amy is a physiotherapist working in acute care, specifically critical care. The subject area of this course has been the focus of her clinical work, teaching, and research interests, for 15 years. Amy has international experience having worked in South Africa and the United Arab Emirates prior to settling in Canada.

The Cardiorespiratory Division (CRD) unites physiotherapists with a special interest in cardiorespiratory physiotherapy. We provide a valuable forum for our members to share information relevant to working with clients across the lifespan and in all areas of cardiorespiratory.
