Overview:
We conducted a pre-post pilot study to assess the feasibility of using an arts-based interactive exercise technology (app on a tablet and wearable sensors) to support in-home exercise for older adults. We recruited 22 participants; 16 (72.7%) were retained. Physiotherapists and participants reported that individualized, embedded exercise demonstrations facilitated exercise participation, while technological glitches and wearable sensor design were barriers.
Speaker:
Ainsley Smith earned her Honours BSc from McMaster University and completed her undergraduate thesis on interactive exercise technology design for older adults. Currently, she is a MSc Biomedical Engineering Candidate at the University of Calgary. Her graduate work includes studying muscle density loss and computed tomography calibration. Ainsley is interested in how technology can improve the diagnosis and the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders.
