Pharmacotherapy Considerations in Older Adults for Physiotherapists
Pharmacotherapy Considerations in Older Adults for Physiotherapists
1 hour
Overview
Due to age-related changes, polypharmacy, and comorbidities, older adults are at risk of experiencing adverse events related to their medications.
According to 2016 data from the Canadian Institute for Health Information, older adults are on approximately 6.9 different classes of medications each year with nearly one-third of those medications classified as potentially inappropriate.
In this webinar, you will learn about medications used in older adults that may be helpful in practice, particularly drug classes in the treatment of pain, mood, and sleep, as well as their potential adverse effects on increased falls, sedation, and cognitive impairment.
While the webinar will be primarily focused on the practical aspects of reviewing the medication list and its implication for practice, we will also discuss the physiological changes of aging and their effects on medications, and specific considerations of medication use in the geriatric population.
